The Do’s and Don’ts of Public Transportation Etiquette

By Tom Nonmacher

Hello fellow globetrotters! If you're like me and find joy in exploring the world, then you know that public transportation is often the most economical and authentic way to get around. However, navigating the public transport system in a foreign place can be daunting, and not knowing the local etiquette can make the experience less enjoyable. So, whether you're hopping on the Tube in London, getting cozy on a Tokyo subway, or enjoying a scenic bus ride in Peru, here are some do’s and don'ts of public transportation etiquette to keep in mind.

First and foremost, do plan your route in advance. With a little research, you can avoid the stress of getting lost or missing a stop. Many cities offer public transport apps, which are a cheap, convenient way to stay informed about routes and schedules. Don't forget to download these before you leave home. Also, do keep your belongings close, not only as a precaution against theft, but also to avoid occupying too much space.

Speaking of space, don't take up more than you need. It's important to be mindful of other passengers, especially during peak hours. If you're carrying a backpack, place it at your feet. If you're seated, avoid sprawling out. And do offer your seat to those who might need it more than you, such as elderly people, pregnant women, or those with disabilities.

Next, let's talk about noise. Do keep conversations, music, and phone calls at a low volume. Not everyone shares our taste in music or wants to hear our phone calls. If you must take a call, keep it brief and quiet. Don't forget, earphones are a traveler's best friend!

Do eat and drink discreetly. If you must snack on the go, choose something that isn't messy or strong-smelling. Remember, public transport isn't a dining room. And don't leave behind any trash. It's essential to keep the space clean for the next passenger.

Lastly, do be patient and respectful. Traveling can be stressful, but a smile and a kind word can go a long way. Don't forget to thank the driver when exiting, a small act of politeness that can brighten their day.

By keeping these tips in mind, you'll not only ensure a smooth journey for yourself, but also contribute to a pleasant travel experience for others. So, the next time you board a bus, tram, subway, or train, remember: we're all in this journey together. Let's make it a great one!
